NETBEUI: The Lost Protocol
Jun 16th
When I was still doing CNC retrofits in our company before, I am tasked to network the CNC machine to the Windows XP PC server for easier file transfer. Having both the experience of networking multiple PC’s and running an internet cafe gave me at least a technical knowhow to employ it in an industrial setup. Then after a few hours irritating work, No connection has been established. It was so damn frustrating.
Slightly confused, I looked on what protocol that our machine has and to my surprise, it was using the old NETBEUI protocol. Argghh! I was under the impression that TCP/IP is the standard protocol for file sharing so it didn’t bother me at all to check the installed network components, and as far as I can remember, Netbeui has been taken out of from the list of microsoft’s supported protocols. It was the time when Windows 2000 was released. Oh well, I googled on how can I install it and here is what I found out.
The files necessary for installing the NetBEUI protocol on Windows XP are Netnbf.inf and Nbf.sys. Complete the following steps to install NetBEUI:
Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and then locate the Valueadd\MSFT\Net\NetBEUI folder.
Copy Nbf.sys to the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Drivers directory.
Copy Netnbf.inf to the %SYSTEMROOT%\Inf hidden directory.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
Right-click the adapter you want to add NetBEUI to, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, click Install.
Click Protocol, and then click Add.
Click to select NetBEUI Protocol from the list and then click OK.
Restart your computer if you receive a message to do so to complete the installation.
The NetBEUI protocol should now be installed and working.
NOTE: %SYSTEMROOT% is a Windows environment variable that identifies the directory where Windows XP is installed (for example, C:\Windows).
CD Ripper
Jun 11th
Cdex is one of the best CD ripping and encoding software that I ever used. This freeware is one of the fastest when it comes to ripping an audio cd to create an mp3. Compare to other ripping/encoding software, this teensy-weensy program doesn’t eat much of your computer’s resources. Take a look at some of the features:
- Direct recording of multiple tracks
- Read / store album information from/to the cdplayer.ini file
- Read / store album information from/to a local and/or remote CD Database (CDDB)
- Support CD-Text (if your CD-drive supports it)
- Advanced jitter correction (based on the cd-paranoia ripping library)
- Indicates track progress and jitter control
- Normalization of audio signal
- Supports many CD-Drive from many manufacturers
- Conversion of external WAV files
- Support for M3U and PLS play list files
- Several Languages are supported
- Best of all, it’s FREE
Ok. The features might not be that captivating but I’m pretty sure if you are the type of person who wants a light and an easy-to-use CD ripping software, this one will definitely win your heart.
